Fishing gear for children: rods, reels & clothing by age

Anyone walking into a tackle shop for the first time can be overwhelmed by the selection: hundreds of rods, reels, lures, and small parts. The good news for parents and grandparents: you only need a little bit to get started with children – and that little bit should above all be light, robust, and easy to use. Expensive is not better here.

In this guide, we explain the most important pieces of equipment in simple terms and tell you what fits which age. You can find the legal framework (which permit at what age) on our page Fishing with children in Germany; and the big overview in our beginner's guide.

Basic equipment – simply explained

  • Rod: The actual "fishing rod" used for angling. For children, a short, light rod (approx. 1.80 to 2.40 m) that is not too heavy to hold is suitable.
  • Reel: The spool on the handle where the line is wound. It helps with casting and retrieving. A small spinning reel is easiest for children to use.
  • Line: The fishing line connects everything to the bait. A thin, simple ("monofilament") line is enough for children.
  • Float: The buoy that floats on top of the water. If it dives, a fish has bitten – every child understands that immediately.
  • Hook: Small, with or without a barb. Removing hooks is an adult's job.
  • Sinker: Small weights that pull the bait down and keep the float upright.
  • Landing net: A net on a pole used to lift the fish safely out of the water – protects the fish and ensures a sense of achievement.

The line, float, sinker, and hook together are called the rig. As an adult, prepare it beforehand so that your child can start fishing right away.

Which equipment suits which age?

Toddlers (approx. 2–4 years): Just being there is everything

At this age, it's not about catching, but experiencing. A small landing net and a bucket are enough to observe water insects or tadpoles on the shallow bank. A real rod is not yet necessary. More important is suitable, weatherproof clothing – and perhaps a first baby bodysuit with a fish motif for the budding angler.

Beginners (approx. 5–7 years): the first own rod

Now it can be a real, but small rod. Recommended:

  • A telescopic rod (collapses like an antenna) around 2 m, light and uncomplicated.
  • A small spinning reel, already spooled with line.
  • A simple float rig – prepared and ready to go.
  • Bait that is fun: maggots, worms, or corn (coarse fish love this).

Plan short trips of one to two hours. A cool children's fishing T-shirt provides extra motivation – and holds up surprisingly well against mud and hook tests.

Advanced children (approx. 8–12 years): more technique, more ambition

At this age, children want to do more themselves: cast, detect the bite, and reel in (that's what playing a fighting fish is called). Now this is suitable:

For longer trips, a warm children's fishing hoodie is recommended – it is often cooler in the early morning and by the water than you think.

Teenagers (from approx. 13 years): almost like the grown-ups

Teenagers can usually fish with lighter-class adult gear and, after passing their fishing exam, be more independent at the water. What counts here above all is that the equipment matches the target fish species. You can find fashionable designs that don't look "like kid stuff" in our outfits for teens.

The underestimated equipment: Clothing

Experienced anglers know: The most common reason why a fishing day with children ends prematurely is not a lack of catch – but cold, wetness, or sunburn. The right clothing is part of the equipment:

  • Several layers (layering look) instead of one thick jacket – this allows you to react to changing weather.
  • A head covering for the sun. Check out our caps.
  • Robust, dirt-resistant clothing that is allowed to get wet and dirty.

You can find everything about weather, sun protection, and life jackets at Safe & weatherproof fishing with children.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which fishing rod is the best for children?

A short, light telescopic or take-apart rod between about 1.80 and 2.40 m with a small spinning reel. It is easy to handle and fits well in small hands. Expensive special rods are unnecessary for getting started.

What does basic equipment for children cost?

You can get off cheaply for starters. A simple combination of rod, reel, line, and small parts is affordable – more important than the price is that everything is light and robust. Invest more in good, weatherproof clothing that will last for several seasons.

Which bait is best for children?

Maggots, worms, and corn are ideal: they are cheap, easy to use, and very popular with coarse fish. This ensures quick success. Maggots are also available as deceptively real protein imitations – in case you find real maggots gross ;-)

At what age does a child need their own rod?

Usually from about 5 years old, when the child wants to actively join in fishing. Before that, a landing net and bucket for observing are sufficient. The decisive factor is the child's enthusiasm, not the exact age.

What clothing should my child wear for fishing?

Several thin layers (layering look), a head covering, and robust, dirt-resistant clothing. It is often cooler and windier by the water than on land – a hoodie and a cap belong in every fishing bag.
